the orphan, the adoptee

heather and i ventured out of the house together tonight to see “the orphan” (new scary movie).  this is the first time we’ve left the house together for more than 45 minutes since we got nico.  you probably can see where i’m heading with this…

so “the orphan” was pretty good!  i was expecting a piece of trash, but i was happily mistaken.  the lead actress is great (vera farmiga), and the plot/screenplay, though ridiculous, is pretty air tight.  heather and i left with a nice terrified feeling.

the terror continued when we got home.  nico had knocked down the baby gate, two chairs, chewed up our copy of dave eggars’ “what is the what”, and destroyed our door blinds.  this was pretty surprising, as she is such a smart dog, and very well behaved when we are around.  i currently have three tabs open in firefox.  this blog, failblog.org, and a google search for “canine seperation anxiety”.  crate training gets serious tonight.  here’s the “you can’t stay mad at me!” pic.

tomorrow there will be a new addition to the frye-kelley household.  a shepherd-mix (mutt) from the local animal shelter.  we’ve decided to name her nico.  tomorrow should be an interesting day; we’ll be introducing dexter to her.  our hopes are high.  nico was “cat tested” today, and apparently she’s terrified of cats.  dexter will definitely like that.  i’ll be a little camera-crazy tomorrow, so expect plenty of pics of our new girl.  just like our boy dex, nico started off with a lackluster name…”selma”.  cheers!

by the way, this ends my “becoming-an-adult-assumption-quartet”: marriage, cat, house, dog.

yet another reason to love mos def:

from an article in SPIN:

SPIN:  What’s the first thing we should change about U.S. foreign policy?

Mos Def: America should deal with cleaning up it’s own house, and stop fucking with people, and stop pursuing it’s international interests with such disregard for how these people live, their cultural ties.  It’s some crazy colonial invader, Ponce de Leon-type shit.  ”We’re gonna civilize y’all with Jesus and democracy and Chicken McNuggets.  What is this you’re over here eating?  Hummus?  That’s some bullshit.  Here’s some French fries, and let’s put some honey glaze on ‘em.  Now you rockin’!”

whatever that means.  a few interesting things since my last frustrated post:

the weather up here has been fantastic; most days have been in the low 80’s.  we’ve been getting rain too.  good stuff.  heather and i have watched seasons 1-4 of entourage and, as much as i didn’t want to like the show, it’s really funny.  my anxiety has been pretty subdued of late, apart from a few “rough spots”, but nothing serious.

next week i’m driving up to st. louis to spend some time with king bobby (see blog link on the left…).  going to hopefully settle on a general vibe for music for his current documentary.  i have a bit of an obsession with some of caetano veloso’s ballads, so we’ll see how that goes.
